Here’s a prime example. Watch this powerful video of a woman who has been hospitalized for nearly 6 months. She is from one of the most unreached regions of China. Oxygen tubes pump air into her nostrils while machines keep her heart pumping. She has stomach cancer. Our missionaries visited her in the hospital and instructed her husband to play worship music throughout the day. Miraculously, her strength is returning day by day!

In the midst of seeming darkness and distress, the Holy Spirit is there speaking words of life over her, singing comforting songs with heavenly intonations. The sound of Christian worship from a Gospel mp3 player fill the room. Our Chinese missionaries gifted this device to her family and it has served as a lifeline for this woman, her husband, and her children. “Please continue to pray for her full recovery,” our missionaries say. “We believe her healing will be a testimony to her whole community!”

So let’s reiterate. Why do we do what we do? Because the name of Jesus has not been heard in countless places around the globe, and we are certain about our calling to take the Gospel to places it has not been named, thus fulfilling the Great Commission. Here’s a little blurb about our niche in the missions world: 

“Most missions organizations have narrowed their focus toward large unreached people groups (populations of 25,000 and above). The reason is simple: it takes a lot of manpower and resources to create impact and see church planting movements happen, so a focus on reaching larger unreached people groups naturally sees bigger results. Sadly, however, thousands of smaller people groups (populations of 25,000 and below) are being overlooked and are still unengaged. So why focus on small unreached people groups? One major reason is that there are more small people groups than there are large people groups. At Within Reach Global, we are trailblazers and pioneers. It thrills us to fill in the gaps of the missions community, going to small unreached people groups that larger organizations cannot or will not target. Some of the ethnic people groups we target have a population of less than 2,000 people. We cannot imagine them slipping through the cracks of evangelistic efforts without a fight. We long to see the beauty of God’s creation as represented through every single unique tribe surrounding the throne in heaven, bringing their own style of worship to their Maker.”

While I was translating his testimony from Mandarin to English for American visitors, I was suddenly struck with a divine revelation. I was sitting in the presence of a modern day hero, a 21st century Apostle Paul, an Acts 29 Christian minister.

“I was apprehended by the police in a rural village while telling unreached people groups about the Jesus,” he recalled. “Within a few days, I was imprisoned.”

He received a 2-year sentence simply for giving witness of God’s grace and glory in China. His wife and newborn child were crushed, and uncertain of their future without a husband and father.

After 1 year, he was to be released on good behavior. But when the police arrived to free him, he declined the early release. I paused in the middle of my translation, surprised by his response to his persecutors.

“How could I leave my prison ministry?” he asked rhetorically. “During the first year of my prison sentence, I led over 20 men to faith in Jesus. I could not abandon them. Who would disciple them and help them grow in their newfound faith?”

Thankfulness was his only response to persecution.

I continued translating for him, telling how he remained in prison for another year to complete his full sentence and disciple inmates who gave their lives to the Lord.

He spoke in jovial tones, a broad smile stretching across his face. For him, it was an honor to suffer for the sake of the Gospel.

I wrestled internally with his testimony. How would I respond to such an unjust system? Would I stay in prison for another year to strengthen new Christians? Would I maintain a positive attitude in the midst of persecution?

“While I was in prison, my wife gave birth to our firstborn son,” he recalled joyfully. “She had no financial income without me, so she shined shoes on the sidewalks to care for our child. But God lifted her from the ashes and replaced her sorrows with joy.”

After 2 years of imprisonment, this Chinese Christian brother was released and reunited with his family. Today, he still travels every week among Southwest China’s unreached tribes.

I thought to ask him if he was afraid of returning to prison, but then I bit my tongue. The question itself seemed silly. There were no marks of trepidation about him. He had seen the worst of persecution and had only become more emboldened. The plans of the police backfired as his experience of persecution molded him into a powerful witness of the Gospel.

Jesus said, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Without a doubt, this Chinese missionary concurs wholeheartedly. And as he travels to the least reached peoples of Southeast Asia to tell of God’s goodness, the kingdom of heaven is being established in mighty ways.

There are 7 billion people in the world today, and 2 billion have never heard the life-saving message of the gospel. When numbers reach into the billions, they seem to lose meaning; they are simply too big.

However, if we shrink the world’s population down to a village of 100 people, perhaps we can start to make sense of the dire needs that crush the global population, and more importantly we can be moved to pray for people who, without Christ, have little hope, peace, joy, or opportunity for salvation.

Picture the world as a village of 100 people.

6 people (all U.S citizens) own 58% of the wealth.
74 people own 39% of the wealth.
20 people own the other 2%.

If you have a bank account (with any amount) you are among the richest 30 people.

18 people struggle to live on $1 USD per day.
53 people struggle to live on $2 USD per day.
20 people are undernourished, 15 are overweight, and 1 dies of starvation.
20 people have no clean drinking water.
56 people have no access to sanitation, and 80 live in substandard housing.
1 person has AIDS, and 1 has a university degree.
7 people have computers, and 67 are illiterate.
48 people cannot speak freely of their religious faith.

Even when the numbers are shrunk to understandable figures, the global issues and problems can seem insurmountable. But when we feel as if there is nothing we can do to help the world, we need to remember that Christ was born of a virgin, lived a perfect life, sacrificed his own body and blood for every person, and rose victorious over sin, death, and hell.

It is this very same Jesus who said in John 14:12, “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father.”

What great works and service can we do when all seems too vast and complex? We can PRAY for a world that desperately needs Christ and his salvation, remembering that the Christ who conquered death takes our prayers to the Master of the Universe.

David Platt says, “We have disseminated a version of Christianity that is far from Christ, and a version of the gospel that is far from true. We have customized Christianity to fit our preferences and our traditions, and we have twisted the gospel to accommodate our thoughts and our opinions.”

Ouch.

Pray for Within Reach Global, that we would be able to reach those who have yet to hear the name of Jesus.

Right now at The Hub Outreach & Hospitality Center:

• nearly 1000 college students and young professionals attend our English Corner every week,
• 40 are being discipled every Saturday,
• 6 were just recently baptized,
• and 20 have joined ministry outreaches among orphans and underprivileged children.

The Hub Outreach & Hospitality Center is a huge conduit of God’s blessing in China! It is a place where

• young people come to know God in an intimate way,
• local missionaries and visiting teams have a short term place to stay,
• and where local Chinese believers gather for Church every week.

We just moved to a brand new location in the heart of the city, and for the last 2 weeks, our dedicated Within Reach Global staff have been repairing, cleaning, painting and preparing the new center for an influx of new target students.

In the last month, 3 volunteer short term teams have come to help grow this ministry. There is one team here in China with us right now. 3 more are coming in the next 3 months.

We are amazed at the rapid growth of this ministry!

Our monthly operating cost is $1,300, which covers everything from

• utilities
• management fee
• Discipleship Dinners
• local missionary expenses

We stepped out in faith without the promise of financial help, and set up this new outreach center, because we are passionate about reaching people who have little to no understanding of the gospel. Our passion is to honor God by reaching unreached people groups, and we want to ask for your help to bring the message of salvation to those who have yet to hear and understand it.
