# #119: Ruined for the Ordinary: Johnny’s Journey from a Dream to Thailand

On this episode of Missions Pulse, David Joannes sits down in Chiang Mai with Johnny Yeverino, a young missionary whose road to Thailand started with a dream when he was fifteen and took a decade of detours, closed doors, and surrender to reach.

Johnny was born in El Paso, Texas, and raised across the border in Juárez, Mexico, where his parents still do ministry. In high school he began dreaming about Thailand: green mountains, preaching the gospel to children and youth, a Bible study in a house with his future wife in the kitchen. He knew nothing about the 10/40 Window or the persecuted church. He just told his parents he thought he was going to be a missionary. By sixteen he was leading youth in his parents’ church, and during COVID he moved to a large church in El Paso where he worked full-time in youth ministry. It looked like the place he was meant to stay. But God kept telling him he would step back from everything to truly know His heart. Then a stranger from a visiting Christ for the Nations team prayed over him and said almost exactly those words.

Within weeks he was enrolled at Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas. “The Lord just ruined my heart for anything ordinary,” Johnny says. Every semester he wanted to buy a one-way ticket somewhere hard, and every semester God slowed him down. David points out that this two-sided coin keeps showing up in missions stories: identity and destiny, sonship and sending. Johnny saw the contrast clearly in Thailand’s Buddhist culture, where people work constantly to correct their karma, and in the church, where Christians often do the same thing. God, he says, wants our wholeness first. The works flow from that.

The heart of the conversation is a moment in a house of prayer. Twice, doors to Thailand had closed. Then came a month in Turkey and Kazakhstan that gave Johnny a deep burden for Muslims, and he planned his whole last semester around a one-way ticket back. During worship, God asked him a question that undid him: “Would you surrender Turkey?” Johnny was angry and heartbroken. Then he felt God telling him to look at His hands, which had given him dreams and nations, and then to look at His face. “He’s the goal. He is the mission.” Johnny realized he had been gripping the gifts instead of the Giver, and the story of Abraham and Isaac came to mind. David adds Amy Carmichael, who was turned away by Hudson Taylor’s China Inland Mission and rerouted through Japan and Sri Lanka before she reached the children of South India. Years later she wrote to them: “He kept me for you, my darlings.”

What came next was just as unusual. Johnny spent forty days in prayer fasting from questions, asking God for nothing and simply being with Him. Midway through, a team from Taiwan visited his school. By the end of the forty days he had peace and everything he needed for the trip, and he spent six months in Taiwan. For two and a half years God had also been repeating five things to him: a house of prayer, a coffee shop, the 10/40 Window, the persecuted church, and next-generation discipleship. He knew nothing about Within Reach Global when he reached out. Days before a visa run to Thailand, someone answered. They told him to meet at a coffee shop that turned out to be part of the ministry. It has a house of prayer on the fourth floor and sits across from a college campus, where the team disciples young adults and intercedes for the 10/40 Window. The team had already received a vision of Johnny. “I was mind blown,” he says.

Johnny’s advice to a fifteen-year-old with a stirring in their heart is simple. Don’t ignore the tug, and keep the fire burning by learning the state of the global church. Take small, practical steps, like a short-term trip or a Bible institute. And let God purify your heart along the way, because “God doesn’t steer a parked car,” as David puts it. Looking ten years ahead, Johnny doesn’t know where he’ll be. He does know he wants to work with the persecuted church and the unreached, raising up worshipers and disciples who will sing the songs of the Lord boldly in places the Word hasn’t reached. David links this to the Moravians, whose hundred years of unbroken prayer in 1727 launched a missions movement, and to Revelation 7:9, where every tribe and tongue worships because Jesus is worthy of the reward of His suffering.

This episode reminds us that a calling is a person before it is a place. Johnny closes with a challenge in Spanish to the Mexican church: learn about the persecuted church and the unreached, and respond to the Great Commission, because Mexico can send missionaries too. The invitation to know God’s heart and join His mission is still open.
