Touching Performance In China To Michael W. Smith Song

I volunteer teach the music program to over a dozen students at a high school in China, and am grateful to play a part in impacting young lives with the kingdom of God.

This week we have been busy with a whole bunch of Thanksgiving activities with Chinese students and children.

One of the highlights of my week was the performance we did with these Chinese high school students that I work with. To the tune of Michael W. Smith’s song, “Place In This World,” we practiced the performance for hours. Reflecting on our performance in hindsight brought tears to my eyes as I realized how much the lyrics really do reflect the reality of life here in China.

The wind is moving
But I am standing still
A life of pages
Waiting to be filled
A heart that’s hopeful
A head that’s full of dreams
But this becoming
Is harder than it seems
Feels like I’m
Looking for a reason
Roaming through the night to find
My place in this world
My place in this world
Not a lot to lean on
I need Your light to help me find
My place in this world
My place in this world

If there are millions
Down on their knees
Among the many
Can you still hear me
Hear me asking
Where do I belong
Is there a vision
That I can call my own
Show me…

As I watched my students sing, I couldn’t help but think how true these lyrics were in their personal lives.

Had they found their place?
Do they have anything to lean on?
Are they down on their knees, calling?

My hope is that these words become more than just a song. My prayer for these young Chinese lives—the future culture-shapers of this generation—is to know and understand God’s love for them.

Will you pray this with me as you partner with us at Within Reach Global?
