The Monk Is Here

Let me tell you about an miraculous spiritual breakthrough that just happened to us.

After driving 9 hours to the 26 Tribes center, our American, Filipino and Indian team found a hotel and got settled in. We were all so tired from the long travel, and most of us went up to our rooms. But Pastor Rich walked down to the lobby to relax. While he was there, a woman walked up to him, and speaking perfect English (a rarity in this part of Asia), told him, “The monk is here! The monk is here!”

A woman walked up to him, and speaking perfect English (a rarity in this part of Asia), told him, “The monk is here! The monk is here!”

Pastor Rich obviously had no idea what she was talking about, and thought it was a weird thing for her to say to a complete stranger. Suddenly the woman said she needed to go, and rushed out of the lobby. Pastor Rich followed her outside the door, but could not find her. She had disappeared, and was nowhere to be found. “Was that an angel?” Pastor Rich thought to himself.

The next morning while we were having breakfast, Pastor Rich told us, “We need to find the most elite monk in this area today.” Our response was simple: “Uh, okay.” Because none of us really knew what was going to happen.

We need to find the most elite monk in this area today.

By this time we were joined by a few of our local missionaries, and all 9 of us piled into the car. We drove 3 kilometers to a massive Buddhist temple that had recently been constructed. It was one of the biggest Buddhist temples in Asia, with a huge 20 story golden Buddha towering over the city. After talking photos, we decided to drive around the back side of the 20 story Buddha, up the mountain, and hike to a location higher than the idol. There we prayed over the city, breaking the spiritual strongholds of Buddhism.

“Let’s go to a smaller Buddhist temple where all the young monks are trained,” one of our local missionaries suggested. So we drove another few kilometers to the Buddhist training center. There we saw over 100 young monks chanting and praying as they read the Buddhist scriptures. The head monk was leading them in their chanting.

Someone on the team walked outside the temple grounds and noticed banners waving in the wind with Chinese and Thai characters: “Celebrating the 50th birthday of Buddhist elder Khuba.”

They called us out of the temple and said, “The monk is here! Look, it was his 50th birthday yesterday.” We walked around the temple grounds, praying and asking where we could find the elder monk. We were told to wait in the elder monk’s quarters. After reading the Buddhist scriptures and leading the young monks in their chanting, he would go there to rest.

30 minutes later, Buddhist elder Khuba—the highest ranking Buddhist monk in all of 26 Tribes region, even well known across the Buddhist world—arrived and invited us up to his personal living quarters. A young monk entered the room, bowing to the floor in front of the elite elder monk Khuba. We realized his authority in the region. “Let’s just start preaching,” and so Pastor Rich began telling the monk the message that God had for him. Khuba allowed us to pray for him, blessing us and thanking us for sharing. He shook Pastor Rich’s hand twice before we left rejoicing at the amazing opportunity to sow spiritual seeds into the most powerful monk in all of 26 Tribes region.

“I have been calling all different government offices and numbers, trying to contact the highest ranking monk in the region. But it was impossible to get an audience with him,” one of our co-workers told us. “To have the spiritual leading and connection that we just experienced in nothing short of a miracle.”

We believe that the Buddhist world in the 26 Tribes region is about to experience the power of God like never before as Jesus is revealed in their lives.
