Hongyan won’t be joining us in remembering Jesus this Easter.
Disclaimer: This does not negate anything that Jesus Christ has done. She’s simply not able to join us in celebration this year.
Here’s why.
Hongyan has never heard of Easter, because
she’s never heard of the resurrection, because
she’s never heard of the cross, because
she’s never heard of Jesus.
She knows no missionaries.
She’s never heard of church.
She has no Christian friends.
She is unreached, untouched, unloved.
She is one of the many precious despised.
Easter is off for Hongyan and her family this year. No one’s ever told her about it. She simply has no access to the gospel.
But Hongyan is not alone. She is one of the many who have slipped through the cracks of our evangelistic efforts.
Crazy right? You’d think the global Christian Church would care more, would refocus it’s efforts among people who have never heard.
But no. Tragically, no.
We’ll dress in our Sunday best.
We’ll hide colored eggs for our kids.
We’ll laugh and celebrate solemnly with friends.
And we’ll forget about Hongyan. She’s just too far away, off our radar, distant, strange. Even though she’s so much like us.
Perhaps one day that will change. But for now, Hongyan’s Easter Sunday will be deafeningly quiet.
